Please use the information on this web site to assist in your decision to seek further guidance and care for your weight and other health issues.

Is weight loss surgery for me?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) have identified strict criteria for patients to qualify for weight-loss surgery. In general, patients who weigh more than 100 pounds over their ideal body weight may be candidates. This includes patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than or equal to 40 kg/m2. In addition, some patients may qualify with smaller BMI’s (35-40) as long as they have associated medical problems such as diabetes, sleep apnea, or hypertension.

Other factors used to determine if you are a candidate for surgery include:

  • Age (older patients have a higher risk profile and do not benefit as much from weight loss surgery, patients younger than 18 are rarely considered for gastric bypass surgery)
  • Severity of medical illnessess. Many times people with severe obesity who are seeking weight loss surgery have associated medical issues that might limit their candidacy for weight loss surgery.
  • Past history of weight-loss attempts . It is important that each patient has exhausted diet and exercise methods of weight loss and have not been successful.

How do I make an appointment to see Dr. Jenkins about my weight loss surgery options?

For most patients with a PPO Insurance product, no prior authorization is required. However, please contact your insurance company to ensure this is a covered condition under your plan.

Then, call our office for an appointment at 530-823-0701

For those of you with an HMO, you will need prior authorization from your doctor before you are able to make an appointment. Please contact your health-care provider for a referral.
